In this 3-week graphic design class, students will gain a foundational understanding of color theory, file types, layers in design files, typography, and visual hierarchy in graphic design. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the skills needed to create visually compelling designs with a strong focus on conveying branding messages clearly and aesthetically. If you’re a small business owner or just want some extra help with visual communication and manufacturing digital/print marketing materials, this class is for you!
NOTE: In order to get the most out of this class, we recommend that students bring a device of their own (laptop, tablet, smartphone) with pre-installed design software (Microsoft Publisher, Canva, Adobe Express, etc.) to use for assignments in class. The class can be attended without a device, but your assignments will largely end up being hand-drawn or research-based instead.

Students will receive thirty minutes of instruction for how to throw on the pottery wheel. Afterwards, students will have up to an hour and a half of independent work time on the wheel with the assistance of our qualified in-house instructor. If you manage to throw a pot successfully during your session, we’ll fire the first one for free, so come try your hand at this artform and get a little messy with us! No experience needed.

In this 3-week drawing class we will be focusing on how to make a colored pencil piece look like photorealism. Our focus will be on creating a candy half exposed and half in its wrapper. We will focus on the warm and cool colors to create metallic foil on some candy bars without using copper or silver colored pencils. You my keep or eat the candy bar once your piece is finished!
All students will receive a 12-count Prismacolor colored pencil set, a colorless blending pencil, a metallic gold pencil, a metallic silver pencil, and a three-pack of blending stumps to keep once the class has concluded. (Plus a candy bar!)

In this afternoon workshop, students will design and begin a stitched picture in embroidery. They will look at historical and contemporary examples, learn several ways to stitch in a decorative fashion, and where to source supplies for future projects. Tips and tricks for happy stitching are the teacher’s strong point for this class, so come have some modern-day fun with these not-so-modern methods!

NOTE: Students who bring their own pottery made during other QAC classes may glaze two of their pieces for the cost of the workshop; if you wish to glaze more than two clay pieces, you will be charged extra for each additional vessel/item. Prices range from $8 – $12 per piece, depending on size.

After a brief overview of what oil paint is and how to use it, the class will jump right into an alla prima painting exercise together. In this two-hour workshop, students will begin their fabric adventure by making a small landscape in cloth. We will show how piecing, appliqué (sewn and fused) can create a beautiful expression of your favorite place. Participants will get a great start on their project during this workshop, and if you need help to finish, you can attend June’s monthly Knitting Circle for more assistance. Participants are encouraged to bring a photo of a landscape and any special cloth they might have. Sewing will be done mainly by hand, but if you have an easily portable sewing machine you are welcome to bring it.

In this afternoon workshop, 5th-8th grade children will use freeform paper-piecing on cardstock to create a quilting pattern. Students will choose colors that play well together, learn about seam allowance, and use glue and simple sewing to make a quilted picture. Afterwards, students will do a quick fuse technique to add curvy shapes to the design. Participants are encouraged to bring any special cloth they might have. Sewing will be done mainly by hand, but if you have an easily portable sewing machine you are welcome to bring it.
Note: sewing machines are optional and may only be used by children who are accompanied by their parents. Parents attend free.

Students will learn to paint the great outdoors in this afternoon oil painting workshop that will take place on the lawn of Quincy Art Center. The main objective of this workshop is to learn how to paint what you see as the sun continually changes your subject lighting throughout the early afternoon—a challenging but fun exercise! This workshop will teach artists to see colors and value in a different way.
NOTE: Oil paint uses solvents and thinners for cleanup; students will use odorless turpenoid instead of regular turpentine, but some materials can still be hazardous if used incorrectly. Only students ages 18 and up may participate in this workshop.
WEATHER: In the case of inclement weather, this workshop will be moved to the following Saturday on June 1st from 1:00PM-3:30PM. If the May 25th workshop is cancelled and you cannot make the June 1st rescheduled session, please contact the Art Center to receive a refund.

After-school Art Club is your chance to come to the Art Center’s studio space and explore your own creativity! This facilitated work time for Quincy Junior High art students will include independent work time, drawing prompt challenges, and the chance to get help with personal artwork from trained artists and art education professionals.
Important information:
- All 8 sessions are included in the flat $25 registration fee; you cannot pay per-session.
- Students are not expected to attend every session unless they want to; the club will still meet over school breaks and on half-days.
- Registration prior to attendance is required for safety purposes. You cannot attend the club without submitting relevant emergency contact information and having a parent/guardian sign this permission slip.
